The international firm scores a leading TMT partner from one of the country’s top firms

Two Birds hits it off with top regulatory partner
Bird & Bird has scored a leading regulatory lawyer to bolster its technology and communications practice in Sydney.

The international firm has appointed Thomas Jones as its newest partner. He joins the firm from Corrs Chambers Westgarth, where he was a telecommunications, regulatory, and competition partner.

Jones has a particular focus on access to regulated infrastructure, with deep understanding of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's approach to telecommunications and access regulation.

His practice complements Bird & Bird’s service offerings in both Australia and the Asia Pacific, the firm said. His areas of focus – access particularly in the technology and communications and energy sectors – supplement the telecommunications regulatory expertise of partners Shane Barber and Hamish Fraser, and the competition expertise of partner Kathryn Edghill. Jones, Barber, Fraser and Edghill are all based in Sydney.

“Thomas is the third partner appointed to the Sydney office this year and is part of our strategy to be the number one law firm globally for organisations being changed by technology and the digital world,” said Barber, who is also the firm’s managing partner for Australia. He said that Jones’ sector expertise will bolster both the firm’s international and Asia Pacific offering.

Jones said he is looking forward to using his expertise to further develop the firm’s technology and communications and energy and utilities practice groups not only in Australia but also in Europe and the greater Asia region.

Two Birds recently scored MinterEllison IP partner Lynne Lewis. The firm also recently promoted Troy Gurnett, also based in Sydney, to the firm’s partnership. They also promoted Amy Cowper and Shehana Wijesena to special counsel, and Matthew Mulcahy to senior associate.
