Ashurst appoints Asia-Pacific investment funds head

Ashurst has announced that Danny Tan will be its head of investment funds for the Asia-Pacific region.

Tan, who was previously head of the private funds team at Allen & Gledhill, is one of the most highly regarded investment funds lawyers in Singapore, where he is based, Ashurst said. He has acted for a varied group of clients that includes government bodies, sovereign wealth funds, fund managers both domestically and overseas, family businesses and financial institutions.

Tan has been ranked by Chambers and Partners as Band 1, and Legal 500 named him a Leading Individual of his field in the country. He has spent 20 years advising on investment funds, particularly fund formation and restructuring, fund investments and fund regulatory matters. His extensive knowledge of onshore and offshore fund vehicles in the areas of private equity funds, hedge funds, fund of funds, real estate, infrastructure and venture capital funds has earned him much acclaim in the Singapore fund management industry.

In his new position, Tan will be coordinating with international partners Dean Moroz in Hong Kong, Con Tzeferos in Melbourne, and Lisa Simmons in Sydney, to spur growth and establish Ashurst’s funds practice in the Asia Pacific market.

“Ashurst has just been named Law Firm of the Year at the Private Debt Investor Awards 2019 and Private Equity Team of the Year at the British Legal Awards 2019. Danny's hire is consistent with our strategy to be best in class in this field,” said Piers Warburton, global head of investment funds at Ashurst.

Ashurst’s regional head of Asia, Patrick Phua, also expressed the firm’s view that Singapore has a ripe investment funds market to capitalise on, and his confidence that Tan’s appointment can move them forward in this regard.

“Singapore is one of the fastest growing asset management hub for private investments in Asia and it is an attractive location for global investment managers and investors, including sovereign wealth funds and pension funds,” he said. “Danny is a highly regarded senior lawyer in the Singapore legal industry and the 'go-to' advisor for fund management. He has built a practice with a reputation for the highest quality work and acts for leading players in the market. I have no doubt Danny will be a valuable addition to the firm.”

Tan appreciated Ashurst’s “exceptional culture of collaboration and excellence” and said that the firm “provides an outstanding platform to build a market-leading fund practice in Asia, which is now experiencing exponential growth.”

The firm’s global investment funds practice has a presence in the UK, US, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Germany and Australia, advising on private equity, real estate, debt and credit, infrastructure, and energy funds. In 2019, Ashurst also appointed Jasmin Gütle and Nicola Hopkins as investment funds partners in their Munich and London offices, respectively.
