Duncan Cotterill has announced the appointment of Richard Smith – a commercial, corporate, and property partner practising from its Christchurch and Queenstown offices and its head of international practice – to the TerraLex board of directors, effective 13 November.

“We are excited about Richard’s appointment to the TerraLex Board and look forward to his continued contributions to our firm and the global legal community,” said the firm in its press release.

TerraLex is a global legal network of independent law firms with more than 22,000 lawyers around the world. Smith’s appointment will take effect from the first date scheduled for the next TerraLex global board meeting in Santiago, Chile.

Smith was appointed as co-vice chair for the Asia-Pacific region of TerraLex last year. He leads Duncan Cotterill’s international practice, which includes the firm’s membership in TerraLex.

Smith’s legal work has involved assisting a wide array of business clients, including corporates in the agribusiness sector, corporate property investors and developers, tertiary institutions, and business and charitable entities.

His clients have also included various smaller business clients, for whom he provides tailored advice and support, as well as company directors and business owners. He has held trustee roles for many of his clients and their families.

Smith has handled complex corporate restructures and acquisitions across diverse industries and matters involving asset restructuring and protection issues, property conveyancing, contract negotiation, financing, and governance.
