Preliminary discussions with existing clients are positive, says Andrew Kerr, city office head
Moray & Agnew in Queensland has announced its acquisition of commercial law firm Greenwoods Law in Cairns, effective 1 July 2025.
Greenwoods Law has established a foundation in the Cairns business community and its commercial activities, having delivered legal services in the area for around four and a half decades, according to a media release from Moray & Agnew.
“We have been working closely with David Greenwood and Barbara McQuillan to ensure a smooth transition for clients with minimal disruption and are excited by the opportunity,” said Andrew Kerr, partner and head of Moray & Agnew’s Cairns office, in the media release.
“We share the philosophy of fulfilling the role of trusted legal adviser to clients, and we consider that the Moray & Agnew team in Cairns will be able to bring local knowledge and national experience and support to the continuing Greenwoods Law clients,” Kerr added in the media release.
The national law firm noted the key similarities between Greenwoods Law’s traditional work and Moray & Agnew’s capabilities and capacity in Cairns.
Moray & Agnew said these similarities will enable it to handle Greenwoods Law’s clients in the property, commercial, and wills and estates practice areas, among others.
“Preliminary discussions with existing clients and referrers of Greenwoods Law have been very positive and we are looking forward to this opportunity,” Kerr said in the media release.
Moray & Agnew’s Cairns team offers various legal services, including business law advice, conveyancing, construction disputes and litigation, general litigation, and wills and estates.
The acquisition announcement follows Moray & Agnew’s news of Ian Denham’s appointment as its new national managing partner and NSW managing partner, also as of 1 July. Denham took over from Geoff Connellan, who held these leadership roles starting in 2018.
According to the firm’s media release, Moray & Agnew has more than 800 people, including 110 partners.
The firm aims to provide domestic and international clients with access to national and integrated legal services national and integrated legal services from its offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Newcastle, Perth, and Cairns.
With a background in insurance law, Moray & Agnew grew in the areas of commercial litigation and dispute resolution, construction and projects, corporate and commercial, government, property and development, and workplace legal services in response to client demand.
