This is the second major tunnelling contract procured by Sydney Metro
Ashurst and Thomson Geer have advised on the signing of a $2.16bn contract to deliver the next stage of the Sydney Metro West tunnelling project.
The Western tunnelling contract is the second major tunnelling contract procured by Sydney Metro. The contract was signed with construction companies Gamuda Australia and Laing O’Rourke Consortium.
Sydney Metro is set to design and construct 9km of twin metro rail tunnels between Sydney Olympic Park and Westmead. This stage of the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Ashurst represented Sydney Metro in the transaction. Partner Harvey Weaver led Ashurst’s team, and was assisted by partners Bill Smith, Alex Guy and Olivia Lau; counsel Ben Kipic; senior associates Mathieu Nolin, Rhiannon Evans and Stephen Blair; lawyer Ben Shilson-Josling; and graduate Helen Wei.
Guy said that the billion-dollar contract " represents a key milestone in advancing construction of this important new metro line, part of Australia's biggest public transport project.”
Meanwhile, Thomson Geer advised Gamuda Australia on all the contract documentation issued by Sydney Metro. Partner Franco Aversa led Thomson Geer’s construction and infrastructure team, with support from consultant Geoff Wood, special counsel Helen Jin, senior associate Catherine Gu, partner Josh Marchant and law graduate India Mauritzen.
“We're pleased to have been able to support Gamuda Australia in winning the right to deliver such an important piece of infrastructure that will benefit Sydney residents,” Aversa said.
Last month, Sydney Metro announced the shortlist of consortia for the Sydney Metro West project’s third major tunnelling contract, which is currently in procurement. In July 2021, Acciona and Ferrovial Construction Joint Venture (AF JV) won the first major tunnelling contract to deliver 11kms of twin metro rail tunnels between Sydney Olympic Park and The Bays.
