He is medical negligence practice lead at the Law Office of Conrad Curry
The Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) has announced the appointment of its new national president, Ian Murray, who previously served as state president of the not-for-profit member organisation’s West Australian branch.
“Common law rights are precious, and they can be legislated away far too quickly,” Murray said in the ALA’s media release. “In my time as President of the ALA, I hope to work towards building a better understanding of the value of common law rights and keep our focus on making sure we retain these rights across Australia.”
A legal practitioner since 2005, Murray earned his legal qualifications and initially practised in the UK. Since then, he has worked in Australia for over a decade. Last January, he and his family moved to Newcastle, New South Wales, from Perth, Western Australia.
Murray is a partner at the Law Office of Conrad Curry and its medical negligence practice lead. According to his biography on the firm’s website, he handles personal injury matters as well as medical negligence cases, focusing on the plaintiff’s side.
“Our values and principles are relevant whether we are fighting for justice for someone injured on the road or in a workplace accident, a survivor of abuse, someone in immigration detention or a person living with disability,” Murray said in the media release.
Murray’s firm bio states that his litigation experience includes successful trials before the District Court of Western Australia, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Western Australia, and the High Court of Australia.
Established in 1994, the ALA originally called itself the Australian Plaintiff Lawyers Association.
According to the media release, the organisation’s members – who are legal professionals aiming to advocate for justice, fairness, and human rights – represent at least 200,000 individuals across the country at any given time.
“The ALA has impacted many positive changes for the rights of injured people around Australia,” Murray said in the ALA’s media release. “The organisation was formed more than 30 years ago and our commitment to protecting and promoting common law rights is still as important as ever. There continues to be work for us to do.”
Murray has replaced Michelle James, director of Maurice Blackburn, who has parted from the role of national president. The ALA’s past national presidents include Shaun Marcus, Genevieve Henderson, Andrew Christopoulos, Noor Blumer, Tom Goudkamp, Greg Barns, Andrew Stone, and Peter Semmler.
“I am looking forward to working with my colleagues from all over the country in this national position,” Murray said in the media release. “One of the great strengths of the ALA is our national presence and ability to learn from each other.”
