Allens has announced the appointment of Gavin Rakoczy – who has over 15 years of experience in front-end financial restructuring and distressed situations – as a Sydney-based partner in the international law firm’s banking and finance practice. 

The firm noted that Rakoczy’s practice focuses on financial restructuring and distressed debt situations, including company debt restructurings, debt trades, and strategic acquisitions and divestments. 

In a media release, Allens said the addition seeks to boost its restructuring capability, improve its delivery of strategic and commercially driven advice across various distressed and special situations, and help it better support its clients in the expanding private capital market in these complex and evolving areas of law. 

“We are delighted to welcome Gavin to our team,” said Tim Stewart, Allens partner and banking and finance practice lead, in the firm’s media release. “His extensive experience and proven track record in handling some of Australia's most complicated restructures and distressed situations will be invaluable to our clients.”

According to his LinkedIn page, Rakoczy is a restructuring and insolvency lawyer with around two decades of experience assisting companies, lenders, and funds. His practice includes complicated restructurings, distressed M&A, defensive structuring, corporate wind-downs, loan-to-own acquisitions, and other securities enforcement strategies. 

He was most recently a partner in Baker McKenzie’s restructuring and insolvency practice in Sydney from March 2022 to May 2025. At King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney, he was special counsel from July 2018 to March 2022 and senior associate from July 2015 to June 2018. 

Rakoczy worked as a senior associate at Lavan Legal from February 2014 to July 2015 and at Lander & Rogers from September 2009 to December 2013. He was also a solicitor/senior associate at Allens from October 2005 to September 2009. 

He obtained his LLB and BA degrees from the University of Western Australia
