WA Supreme Court appoints new judges

The Supreme Court of Western Australia has announced the appointment of Kate Glancy and Gary Cobby as judges of the court.

The appointments mark a significant addition to the bench, with both set to commence their roles on 29 January.

Glancy has been serving as a judge of the District Court since 8 January 2018. She brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having also served as a deputy president of the State Administrative Tribunal since 20 October 2020. Before her tenure as a judge, Glancy held the position of deputy state solicitor, overseeing the civil wrongs practice of the State Solicitor's Office.

Cobby is a seasoned barrister with over 30 years of legal experience. He joined the Supreme Court after a distinguished career in private practice. He joined the independent Bar in 2008 after practising at several commercial law firms.

He was also appointed senior counsel in 2018. His expertise spans commercial law, corporations, consumer protection, equity, banking, and insolvency.

Chief Justice Peter Quinlan, congratulated Glancy and Cobby on their appointments on behalf of the court, emphasising the diverse experience and expertise Glancy and Cobby bring to the bench.

"The court has great pleasure in welcoming the appointment of Justice Glancy and Justice Cobby to the court," Quinlan said. 'Their Honours bring a great wealth and diversity of experience to the court's work, both on the bench and in legal practice. That diversity of experience and expertise will make a significant contribution across the breadth of the court's criminal and civil jurisdictions. We are delighted to have them join us in the work and life of the court."

The formal welcome ceremonies for Glancy and Cobby will be conducted at ceremonial sittings, with specific dates to be announced.
