Anne O’Donoghue shares key insights on visa reform and client advocacy
With global conflict, labour shortages, and domestic policy shifts placing pressure on Australia’s immigration system, boutique firms are stepping up to meet the moment. Australasian Lawyer has named Immigration Solutions Lawyers a Top Specialist Firm for 2025, recognising its strong legal advocacy and deep commitment to justice.
In a new interview with Australasian Lawyer TV, Director and Senior Counsel Anne O’Donoghue shared how the firm is navigating a legal landscape defined by complexity and urgency. “Right now, we’re dealing with difficult visa matters—health and character issues, ministerial interventions, employer compliance,” she said. “Our job is to ensure every application is decision-ready, despite ongoing processing delays.”
O’Donoghue shed light on the strain caused by rising migration numbers and limited infrastructure: “There’s this constant tension between population growth and national capacity. It’s a real balancing act.”
The firm’s work spans humanitarian and corporate matters, but it’s the human impact cases that continue to resonate. O’Donoghue reflected on one standout case—a two-year effort to reunite an Afghan judge with her brother’s family, after the tragic loss of her husband. “We finally got them into Australia. The client gave us a handwoven tapestry with our firm’s name. It meant the world.”
She also cautioned about the limitations of current reforms: “Temporary visas addressing labour exploitation offer some relief—but they don’t provide permanent solutions. Exploitation moves into modern slavery, and that’s a global crisis.”
As a leading woman in law, O’Donoghue is passionate about mentorship and transparency. “You have to be pragmatic, empathetic, and upfront with your clients,” she said. “You’re not just there for the good times—you’ve got to walk with them through setbacks and appeals. Trust is everything.”
Her advice to young female lawyers? “Never give up. Stay humble, keep learning, and don’t expect instant success. If something goes wrong, look for a solution—not someone to blame.”
