Michael Daley, New South Wales attorney general, has announced the appointment of Richard Scruby to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, to be sworn into the Equity Division on 3 September 2026.
“He is recognised as a leading litigation barrister and has significant experience across a broad range of areas including significant commercial and corporate matters,” Daley said in a media release from the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).
In 2017, Scruby received an appointment as senior counsel. His broad practice has focused on matters involving corporations, commercial law, equity, insolvency, and taxation.
In 2004, he joined Tenth Floor Wentworth Selborne Chambers.
According to Scruby’s profile on Tenth Floor Chambers’ website, Scruby’s practice areas also include administrative, public, and constitutional law; arbitration; commissions of inquiry; consumer protection; insurance; and real property.
According to the DCJ’s media release, Daley expected Scruby’s appointment to “enhance the administration of justice and strengthen the bench’s ability to serve the community.” Daley noted that Scruby has 24 years of experience in the NSW bar, having become a member in 2002.
Scruby has been a member of the NSW Bar Association’s professional conduct and diversity and equity committees. He has written for the Australian Bar Review and Australian Law Journal on topics including the law of contracts and corporations.
At the start of his legal career, he worked as an associate to Justice Ian Callinan in the High Court of Australia in 1999.
