New judge is a local practitioner with “significant ties to the NT community”

The Northern Territory government has announced the appointment of Meredith Day Huntingford as a new judge of the Local Court.
Day is the current deputy chief executive officer of the Department of the Attorney-General and Justice. She has practiced law in the NT since 1987 in a range of areas that includes workers’ compensation, child protection, and domestic violence. She also served as the director of litigation at the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, judicial registrar of the Local Court, and head of legal for the territory’s Department of Health.
“Meredith Day has been practicing law in the Northern Territory for over three decades and has a vast array of legal experience,” said NT Attorney-General Natasha Fyles. “She has served Territorians in a number of key legal roles both in government and in the private sector. She has a long-standing connection to the Northern Territory community and considerable experience across multiple sectors. I congratulate Ms Day on this appointment and know she’ll serve the Local Court with distinction.”
Maria Savvas, president of Law Society NT, also welcomed Day’s appointment.
“The society welcomes the announcement of Ms Day’s appointment as a Local Court judge,” said Savvas. “Ms Day is a local practitioner with significant ties to the NT community. Having practised in this jurisdiction for more than 30 years across a broad range of areas, Ms Day is well equipped for the role of a judicial officer. Ms Day will bring a depth of knowledge about the Territory, its community, and its legal system to her new role.”
