Major UK firm axes 91 jobs

Simpson Millar has confirmed that it will cut 91 jobs after a two-month staff consultation.

The firings include 20 fee earners and 71 back-office staff members, the UK’s Law Society Gazette said.

“We are very sorry to have lost valued colleagues as a result of this process, and our immediate concern is to provide support and assistance to help them find alternative employment and to thank them for all they have done for the firm,” said Greg Cox, managing partner.

The job cuts come as the national firm tries to return to the stable footing it lost while under former owner Fairpoint, a legal and financial services company in the UK. Fairpoint entered administration last year, due mainly to unmanageable rental costs.

Since then, the firm has received £7m from investor Doorway Capital. The Law Society said that “cuts follow what has been described as ‘significant under-investment’ by Fairpoint.”

Cox said that the firings are necessary to stabilise the business. The cuts include eight employees who have been appointed to new roles. The firm may also appoint six more from the group to other roles.
