Special counsel and associate boost specialist firm’s Sydney team
Carter Newell has attracted two insurance specialist lawyers to boost its Sydney insurance team.
The firm has appointed Julie Bowker as special counsel and Matthew Algie as associate.
Bowker, who moved from newly-merged firm McCabe Curwood, has extensive experience in insurance law. She has a focus on professional indemnity and is also an expert in property damage, construction, and public and product liability claims, having acted in numerous major property- and fire-loss matters.
She brings international experience to the firm, having begun her legal career in the UK as assistant solicitor at Pinsent Masons and DLA Piper. She has also served as a partner at Halliwells, director at DWF, and partner at Keoghs. In 2012, she moved to Australia and joined Wotton + Kearney as a senior associate. She joined Curwoods Lawyers in 2014.
Algie, who also brings some international experience to Carter Newell, is focused on general liability disputes and professional negligence claims involving the health profession, the firm said.
“As the firm’s eastern seaboard practice grows, the addition of these experienced lawyers enables us to continue to deliver strong results for our clients,” said Sydney partner Michael Bath.
Bowker and Algie join an insurance practice that acts for major insurance companies, Lloyd’s syndicates, underwriting agencies, captive insurers, affinity groups, self-insureds and insurance brokers across Australia and overseas, including London and Singapore.
In July, the firm welcomed two senior lawyers to the partnership, and promoted a new special counsel. In April, the firm promoted a new partner and welcomed another from a national rival.
