Earlier this week, Adrienne Trumbull told Australasian Lawyer about a key event in her legal career. In this second part of this interview, she discusses the “game changer” that is AI, and enjoying her “golden year” as a parent.

What is going on at Hive Legal? Are there any new programs and initiatives that you’re particularly interested in?

Hive Legal has just celebrated its 11th birthday, which is a significant milestone given its ‘outside of the box’ structure on inception, including value pricing. Now, we are focussed on building better services for clients, through use of technology and simplification of products, as well as broader reaching community initiatives, such as our RAP, our environmental impact and wellbeing.

We are also constantly focussed on how to build better and more sustainable careers for our team members. Having had the opportunity to practice law in a range of environments including more traditional top tier firms, I’m particularly passionate about creating a workplace that allows individuals as their whole selves to shine, and fosters opportunities in law for an enjoyable, exciting and long-lasting career.

What should the profession focus more on?

Sustainability and wellness in our professions. There are few other professions that hold such extreme expectations, including the volume and complexity of work we see as normal. While the generations to come may still be perfectionists, I believe they will demand more in terms of work life balance. We need to find a way to reshape our day to day to make this workable for the long haul.

What are the challenges you expect in your practice, and in the business of law in general, going forward? What challenges are particularly pressing in the country’s legal industry?

The clear game changer in our industry is the rapidly evolving technology, most specifically AI. The main challenge for all of us is getting our heads around what it can now do, and equally or more importantly, what it cannot. This is going to bring a re-shaping of our day to day jobs, especially for more junior lawyers, but it also brings incredible opportunity.

What are you looking forward to the most in the coming year?

Professionally, I’m looking forward to continuing to explore what we can do with technology, including the way we offer services.

Personally, this is our ‘golden year’ of all three kids in one school before they part ways again and we enter the world of teenagers – I’m planning on enjoying every minute!
