Turner Hopkins opens collaborating office with Chinese firm Zhong Wen

Turner Hopkins has shared that representatives from Zhong Wen Law, a Chinese law firm, travelled to New Zealand in late November to finalise the establishment of its presence in Turner Hopkins Law’s offices in Takapuna, Auckland.

In a news release, Turner Hopkins announced that the team celebrated the official opening of its and Zhong Wen’s collaborative office. The Chinese firm live-streamed the event – attended by guests, clients, and representatives of both firms – to its offices across China.

In its news release, Turner Hopkins expressed gratitude to the team that helped organise the event. The firm also acknowledged partner Samuel Ames and solicitor Samantha Si, the MCs during the opening.

Turner Hopkins shared that it has a dedicated Chinese legal team, which has worked across the Turner Hopkins and Zhong Wen offices on multiple existing cross-border matters. Joy Yuan, principal, and Jerry Yu, special counsel, lead the Chinese legal team.

“We look forward to strengthening cross-border legal capability and supporting clients in both China and New Zealand,” Turner Hopkins said in its news release

June visit

Last June, four Turner Hopkins representatives visited Zhong Wen Law’s offices in China to affirm its commitment to a shared office presence and a cross-border legal network between the two firms.

According to a Turner Hopkins newsletter from that time, during the 10-day trip, the Turner Hopkins representatives visited Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as met with large Chinese legal professionals and law firms, New Zealand’s Consulate General in Shanghai, and New Zealand’s trade commissioner in Shenzhen.

Turner Hopkins explained that these meetings sought to help it:

  • Fortify its international relationships
  • Confirm its commitment to cross-border legal collaboration– especially in the fields of immigration, commercial law, and investment – amid the increasingly globalised environment
  • Demonstrate the depth of New Zealand’s legal framework
  • Consider ways it can support clients doing business across jurisdictions

According to Turner Hopkins, preceding the official unveiling of the joint office were:

  • an inauguration ceremony
  • a forum regarding China–New Zealand cross-border investment, immigration, and the recognition and enforcement of Chinese judgments in New Zealand courts
  • the formal signing of a joint office cooperation agreement by Turner Hopkins managing partner Michael Robinson, Zhang Yang of Zhong Wen New Zealand, and Yan Hongshi of Zhong Wen Shenzhen
