Presenting New Zealand's Most Influential Lawyers for 2023

New Zealand is home to some exceptional legal professionals committed to justice and having a profound impact. The Most Influential Lawyers of the year embody the ability to anticipate what's coming next, empathize with people in stressful situations, and willingness to learn and upskill.

“I’m essentially self-taught and continuously learn about this subject matter that moves and changes so fast,” says 2023 awardee James Cochrane, partner at Lane Neave, whose passion and profound understanding of digital assets are helping others overcome their fear of cryptocurrency failures and scams.

The 26 winners span a diverse range of legal sectors, bringing their own points of view to the table. The list features legal experts influencing human rights, business, government, non-profit, and others.

Some young awardees are also building a more culturally aware legal system. McCaw Lewis executive director Renika Siciliano’s unwavering commitment to incorporating tikanga (Māori customary practices or behaviours) into the legal profession has garnered her recognition as a Young Influencer. “That was important to us because our culture here is so important; it’s first and foremost,” Siciliano says. “If you get the culture right, then you can do great things because you’re all in the same boat.”
