Technology's continued evolution is "the one constant" in his career thus far
Earlier this week, Flacks & Wong senior associate Jason Maddox told NZ Lawyer about successfully guiding an NZX lister through major transactions. In the second part of this interview, he shares his desire for the legal profession to help bolster public legal literacy and his expectations regarding market activity in New Zealand in the coming year.
What should the profession focus more on?
I would like to see the profession help with public legal literacy, particularly in the context of succession planning and M&A in the SME sector. A large number of New Zealand’s SMEs are owner-operated and facing succession pressures as founders approach retirement. For many, M&A is the most viable exit strategy, yet many business owners are unfamiliar with the legal steps involved until they are already well into the process. Proactively discussing legal drivers, risks, and strategic considerations involved in M&A processes with business owners enables them to successfully navigate an M&A transaction for the best possible result.
What challenges are particularly pressing in the country’s legal industry?
Current challenges include attracting and maintaining top tier legal talent - driven by competitive global markets, evolving expectations, and alternative opportunities; the ongoing development of workplace culture, mental health awareness and professional standards; and the potential adoption and application of technology solutions.
What are your thoughts on new technology and its impact on the legal profession?
The continued evolution of technology is the one constant of my career to date. At present, we are seeing early steps toward incorporating technology and AI tools into legal practice. Ultimately, I see technology as a tool the legal profession will adopt in day-to-day practice to enhance efficiency and assist lawyers in providing timely, critical advice and adding meaningful value for clients.
What are you looking forward to the most in the coming year?
Professionally, I’m looking forward to increased market activity as the New Zealand economy recovers through 2026 and helping clients achieve meaningful outcomes. Personally, I’m focused on taking up opportunities to learn, develop and expand my skillset, particularly strategic advisory tools.
If you could relive one day in your life, which day would it be and why?
There are many great days I would like to relive; however, I would choose the day we completed our family. All the days I would like to relive are days when I was surrounded by family and friends or achieved a goal after significant effort.
