Former Arbitrators' and Mediators' Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ) executive director Monique Pearson has been named the incoming New Zealand chief executive officer at the College of Law.

She begins leading the organisation on 2 November.

“The legal profession is changing rapidly, bringing new opportunities as well as new demands on the skills and capabilities lawyers need throughout their careers. I am excited to be joining an organisation with such a strong reputation for practical legal education and a genuine commitment to supporting lawyers at every stage of their careers”, Pearson said.

She brings leadership experience from stints at EY, PwC and academyEX. She has worked with professional services, education and member-based organisations.

Pearson was practice manager at EY Law New Zealand from 2001 to 2004, according to LinkedIn. At PwC New Zealand, she was business development director from 2015 to 2017.

She became interim general manager and advisory board chair at academyEX.

Pearson became executive director at AMINZ in January 2024. She was also executive director at the New Zealand Bar Association over 2006-2011 and was granted honorary life membership.

At present, she sits on the board of the New Zealand Society of Association Executives. She has gleaned governance experience in education, financial services and social impact organisations. In 2024, she co-chaired Debtfix Foundation’s board of trustees.

“Monique brings a rare combination of strategic leadership, commercial insight and a deep understanding of the legal profession. She has successfully led organisations through growth and transformation, and I am confident she is the right person to lead our New Zealand business into its next chapter”, said Marcus Martin, group chief executive officer at the College of Law.

College of Law New Zealand board chair Chris Moore also praised Pearson’s appointment to the leadership.

"We are pleased to see someone of Monique's calibre appointed to lead the College's New Zealand business. She understands the profession we serve and brings the experience to lead the College through its next phase of growth. The New Zealand board looks forward to working with her as we continue to support lawyers and the profession across New Zealand", Moore said.
