Office of Public Prosecutions also adds Cara Foot as Crown prosecutor
The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) recently announced the appointments of Michael Stanton as a senior Crown prosecutor and of Cara Foot as a Crown prosecutor.
In news releases from the OPP, Mark Gibson, acting director of public prosecutions, and Abbey Hogan, solicitor for public prosecutions, congratulated them both on their appointments.
“He brings exceptional experience in criminal and public law, and his expertise will be a significant asset to Crown Prosecutors’ Chambers,” Gibson said of Stanton.
Regarding Foot, Gibson said, “Her extensive prosecutorial experience and sound judgment will be a strong asset to Crown Prosecutors’ Chambers.”
Stanton’s criminal and public law practice has focused on appellate work and public inquiries.
He has appeared before the High Court of Australia, as well as before the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria in connection with conviction and sentence appeals. His appearances in royal commissions and coronial inquests have included complex and high-profile matters.
Stanton signed the Victorian bar roll in 2007 and became senior counsel in 2024.
Before practising as a member of the bar, he served as an associate and researcher in the Victorian Supreme Court’s Court of Appeal and as a duty lawyer in Victoria Legal Aid’s criminal law division.
Foot’s background has encompassed prosecution and defence work alike.
Over the past decade, she has made regular appearances on behalf of the director of public prosecutions. She has engaged in significant jury trial work in Victoria’s County and Supreme Courts. She has also garnered experience in the coronial jurisdiction.
Foot signed the Victorian bar roll in 2015.
Before earning admission to the bar, she acted as a solicitor and solicitor advocate at the OPP. In this role, she managed complex indictable matters. She also appeared regularly before Magistrates’ and County Courts in Victoria.
Last March, the OPP announced the appointments of Jonathan Manning, Fiona Martin, and Jordan O’Toole as Crown Prosecutors.
Brendan Kissane, director of public prosecutions, welcomed the appointments alongside Gibson and Hogan.
“Their experience in criminal law will strengthen the work of the OPP and Crown Prosecutors Chambers,” Kissane said in a news release. “We look forward to working closely with Jonathan, Fiona and Jordan.”
