Moulis Legal has announced the return of alumnus Christopher Hewitt, who has been appointed head of its infrastructure, sustainability, and energy (ISE) project group, effective 1 October.

Hewitt’s career covers multiple continents and industries, including energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, and technology. He has worked on large-scale and high-stakes projects for government bodies and multinational corporations across Australia, Asia, North America, and southern Africa.

He is experienced with the client-side management of high-value infrastructure ventures and knowledgeable about complex cross-border regulatory landscapes, said a press release of Moulis Legal. He can bridge the gap between strategic commercial advice and legal compliance.

“Christopher’s expertise in domestic and international markets will add immeasurably to our existing experience in the energy, infrastructure, and sustainability sectors,” said Daniel Moulis, managing partner and chair of Moulis Legal, in the press release.

During his time away from Moulis Legal, Hewitt served in senior executive and advisory roles, including at Jacobs and KBR, two international energy and infrastructure consultancies.

He most recently led KBR’s energy transition and sustainability division, where he managed and worked on nationally significant energy, infrastructure, and sustainability projects and key investments across Asia.

Hewitt has an MBA, a master of laws degree, and specialised qualifications in energy policy and governance and Chinese business and law.

“His ability to provide strategic and commercial insight across complex regulatory environments will be a tremendous asset to clients looking for hands-on legal guidance for their energy transition and sustainability projects,” Daniel Moulis added in the press release.

Project group’s work

In the press release, Hewitt expressed excitement about his return to Moulis Legal and about the prospect of leading the ISE project group, which is based in the firm’s Brisbane office.

“The infrastructure and energy sectors are undergoing unprecedented transformation,” Hewitt said in the press release. “I look forward to collaborating with the talented team here to provide clients with cutting-edge legal and strategic advice that helps them navigate the complexities of the global energy transition in a practical and protected way.”

The ISE project group, working alongside the firm’s existing teams, seeks to address the global energy transition and the consequent commercial and legal challenges. These challenges include regulatory changes; a shift toward sustainable infrastructure; due diligence, project structuring, and documentation; and public and private finance arrangements and incentives.

The ISE project group offers legal advice on regulatory compliance, planning and energy law, risk management, commercial arrangements, infrastructure, and construction across Australia. If needed, the project group will collaborate with a global network of like-minded firms.
