University of Technology Sydney launches AI-centred e-learning course for lawyers

The University of Technology Sydney’s (UTS) Human Technology Institute (HTI) has debuted an AI-centred online learning course for lawyers in Australia.

The course aims to equip lawyers with foundational knowledge and skills to deal with AI’s challenges and opportunities. The HTI is working with law firms and community and government legal practices on the self-paced online course and live webinar.

“AI is all around us, and legal professionals are at the heart of this period of massive technological transformation. Lawyers are increasingly being asked to advise clients who want to use AI lawfully and responsibly, as well as clients affected by AI that is deployed by others”, said Professor Edward Santow, HTI co-director and Australian Academy of Law Fellow.

The course tackles the following topics:x

  • AI’s core concepts of AI
  • AI’s use by legal professionals
  • the needs of clients using or affected by AI
  • risks and harms associated with AI
  • responsible AI use in legal practice, including ensuring compliance with professional legal and ethical obligations

HTI experts in AI, regulation and governance will lead the hourlong webinar, which will share updates on technology and policy developments pertaining to AI’s use by Australian legal practitioners. Th webinar will also tackle participants’ questions and comments.

“AI is increasingly affecting legal practice itself, with lawyers relying on an ever-growing range of AI-powered products and services. Whether providing advice or using AI themselves, lawyers need a solid understanding of the opportunities and risks posed by AI, including making sure they are complying with their professional legal obligations”, Santow said.
