Burch&Co has announced the promotions of Matthew Gasparini to associate director and leader of the dispute resolution and litigation team, and Sean Carr to senior associate and co-leader of the firm’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC) practice.

Nich Burch, founder of the boutique corporate and commercial law firm, welcomed the promotions in a media release. Burch shared that these appointments seek to reflect the firm’s future.

“Sean and Matthew are smart, grounded, and values-driven lawyers who lead with integrity,” Burch said in the media release. “They each bring a deep commitment to client outcomes and to building teams that are capable, empowered, and forward-looking.”

In the media release, the firm said the appointments aim to demonstrate its growth, broad vision, diverse professional journeys, internal talent pipeline, client-centred approach, and human-centred approach to law firm leadership.

“I’m proud to see them step into these leadership roles,” Burch said in the media release. “I am also proud that our firm has proved that having a human approach to the way our team works together and within our client community can bring great success for all involved.”

In its media release, Burch&Co congratulated Carr and Gasparini on their promotions and said it anticipated their continued contributions to the firm, its clients, and their colleagues. Both lawyers are based in Melbourne.

After initially working in education, Gasparini joined HWL Ebsworth in Melbourne in February 2018 and commenced his litigation career.

According to his LinkedIn page, he joined Burch&Co as an associate in March 2021, became a senior associate in February 2024, and began effectively leading its dispute resolution and litigation team in July 2024.

Burch&Co said, as the formally appointed associate director, Gasparini takes on leadership of the practice and has responsibilities relating to team performance, forecasting, helping shape the team’s and firm’s direction, and facilitating the firm’s internal education program.

“As Associate Director, I’m excited to build on our team’s success and amplify our services across risk mitigation, pre-dispute strategy and litigation,” Gasparini said in the media release. “We’re deeply engaged with our client community and ready to grow that impact.”

Sean Carr

According to his LinkedIn page, Carr joined Herbert Smith Freehills in 2020, became part of its commercial disputes team by the end of that year, and left in June 2023.

“I’m excited to step into a leadership position within the OGC team,” Carr said in the media release. “It’s a great opportunity to continue delivering exceptional, embedded legal support that truly aligns with our clients’ businesses.”

The firm said, in his new role, Carr will co-lead the OGC practice with Nich Burch and assist in growing the team’s capabilities and deepening its integration with clients.

“The OGC model is proving its value, and I’m looking forward to helping more clients realise its benefits,” Carr added.
