New counsel will focus on data, technology and cyber law

Reed Smith scores senior lawyer from Big Four SG firm

Reed Smith has welcomed a senior lawyer in Singapore, growing its global IP, technology, and data group.

Charmian Aw has been appointed as counsel by the major American firm, which said that she will focus on data, technology, and cyber law.

Aw moves from Big Four Singapore firm Drew & Napier, where she was a director for more than four years in the technology, media, and telecommunications practice, as well as the corporate and finance practice. She was also seconded to ESPN Star Sports and Discovery Asia.

Aw is a specialist in Singapore data-protection law compliance and enforcements, giving her an ideal position to grow the firm’s tech and data practice in Asia, Reed Smith said.

Barry Stimpson, Reed Smith’s Singapore managing partner, said Aw brings to the firm a wealth of industry and market knowledge that complements the firm’s existing practices.

The appointment adds an important offering for clients in Singapore, he said. The appointment comes after Reed Smith expanded its Singapore office in July. In April, the firm recruited partner Daniel Perera from Norton Rose Fulbright to boost its commodities team in the city-state.

“She has a wealth of experience advising clients on data protection, technology privacy and information-governance issues,” said Anthony Diana, who co-chairs the firm’s IP, tech and data groups. “Our IP, Tech & Data Group brings together our information technology, privacy and data security capabilities with our traditional intellectual property and technology services. This adds strength and increases connectivity in today’s information-driven economy, helping us to protect the information and innovation at the heart of our client’s businesses.”
