Professional services guru named as law firm CEO

An ex-PricewaterhouseCoopers CEO and long-term professional services heavyweight has been named the new CEO of an Australian top tier law firm

A professional services heavyweight has been named the new CEO of an Australian top tier law firm, in a move the firm hopes will help with growth and client engagement ambitions.

Minter Ellison today announced that Tony Harrington AM will step into the role of chief executive on 1 July.

Harrington will replace John Weber who has served in the role since 2009, and comes from a distinguished career in financial and professional services.

"I'm delighted to be joining Minter Ellison at this dynamic time in the legal profession, which faces increasing competition, changing client needs and, like many industries today, the disruptive forces of new technology,” Harrington said.

Harrington served as Australian senior partner and chief executive of PricewaterhouseCoopers for eight years, where he subsequently took on the role of global managing partner in strategy and transformation.

Most recently he has served as managing director of investment bank Moelis & Company.

Minter Ellison chairman Bruce Cowley said that Harrington’s track record in the professional services market both in Australia and Asia  made him a natural leader for Minter Ellison, given the firm's stated goal of growing its Australian business and its international network.

Cowley also thanked outgoing chief executive John Weber, remarking that during his leadership the firm expanded its capabilities and performed strongly.

Harrington's appointment brings a domestic and international executive search to a close and was approved by a partnership vote.
