NSW online firm becomes first Australian NewLaw firm to hit the UK

NSW firm Sprintlaw has become first Australian NewLaw firm to extend its reach to the UK.

The firm, which boasts a completely online operation, announced the introduction of Sprintlaw UK in England and Wales on 8 June. The suite offered in the region includes fixed-fee legal packages and subscriptions under a legal consultancy model, Sprintlaw said.

“There’s a strong appetite for affordable, online legal services in the UK market,” cofounders Alex Solo and Tomoyuki Hachigo said. “We’re excited to launch in the UK as we have in Australia and leverage our innovative tech-enabled model to help UK small businesses get quality legal services at a fraction of the cost of traditional providers.”

They said that the offering was already getting “significant interest” from new clients in the UK, as well as current Australian clients with a UK base.

To support the expansion effort, Sprintlaw generated $1m in additional funds through angel investors. Among these investors was Deven Billimoria, the retired CEO of ASX-listed Smartgroup, who has been tapped to serve as an advisor.

The firm also appointed Adil Khan, former legal network manager at UK legaltech company Lexoo, as the managing director of the UK arm.

“I’m looking forward to bringing our novel legal services model into the UK market. Sprintlaw is a unique offering that truly blends tech and law in a manner that SMEs have been seeking for years,” Khan said.

Since its inception in 2017, Sprintlaw has seen considerable growth in Australia. The firm was named among the fastest-growing firms in the APAC region in the Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific 2021 report published by Deloitte.

Sprintlaw also picked up the win for Excellence in Technology & Innovation at the 2020 Australasian Law Awards.
