Mayer Brown JSM has picked Pieter de Ridder as its new managing partner in Singapore.

The seasoned partner succeeds Kevin Owen, the firm’s founding partner in the city-state who is set to retire. Owen has been with the firm for more than 20 years and led the construction team in Hong Kong before overseeing the establishment of the Singapore office in 2011.

De Ridder, who joined Mayer Brown JSM in 2015, has more than 25 years’ experience in Asia. Before moving to Mayer Brown JSM, he was with Loyens & Loeff, an international law firm headquartered in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

He advises companies and institutions on taxation matters, including direct investments, restructurings, financing arrangements, private equity, and supply chain structures. He has deep knowledge of taxation in many Asia jurisdictions, including Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and China.

Terence Tung, the senior partner of Mayer Brown JSM, said he is confident de Ridder will build on the firm’s success in Singapore and continue its momentum in Southeast Asia. Tung also praised to Owen for his contributions to the firm and for his dedication to the Singapore office.

De Ridder said he is excited about the future of the firm in Southeast Asia. He said that the increasing interest of the firm’s clients in frontier markets in Asia puts the firm at a unique advantage, since it is among the few law firms that have both the breadth of offering and the international platform to serve client needs.
