He is also an employment law instructor at the University of New South Wales.

He sits on the board of Youth Action NSW and the Multicultural NSW advisory board. He has commented on law reform, social justice and diversity in publications like the Sydney Morning Herald and ABC.

McCallum was the first completely blind person to be appointed to full professorship at an Australian university. He was the foundation professor in industrial law at the University of Sydney, where he was once dean of law.

He was the first president of the Australian Labour Law Association, and once chaired the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In 2011, he was awarded Senior Australian of the Year.

The Australia Day Council of NSW calls on Australia Day Ambassadors to share their stories at local Australia Day events across the state.
