A major US firm that’s known for its litigation expertise is handling a large chunk of legal work for Facebook as it faces the fallout from its latest data privacy scandal.
Data from Bloomberg Law show that Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has appeared in 10 of at least 27 securities and privacy lawsuits connected to the controversy.
The suits, which include privacy and securities class actions, have flooded in since it was reported last month that Cambridge Analytica had access to data of millions of Facebook users. The consulting firm is alleged to have used the data to sway elections, including in the US.
Facebook usually taps international firm Cooley for litigation mandates. Bloomberg Law Litigation Analytics data showed that the Palo Alto, California-headquartered firm, which is known for its work for the US technology sector, has represented the social media company in about a third of litigation matters in the past five years.
On Tuesday, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced the US Congress in a joint session of the commerce and judiciary committees that lasted for more than five hours.
