DTL lauds NSW government response to LGBTQ+ hate crimes inquiry

Dowson Turco Lawyers (DTL) praised the NSW government’s decision to accept all recommendations from the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry into historical LGBTIQ+ hate crimes.

“This is a pivotal moment for survivors and the families of victims who have long awaited accountability and recognition of the pain and injustices they have endured. By adopting these recommendations, the NSW Government is taking crucial steps toward healing and justice and ensuring that hate-fuelled violence will no longer be tolerated in our society”, senior partner Nicholas Stewart said.

He added that DTL was eager to see the referral of several cases for re-opened inquiries before the Coroner’s Court in NSW.

Stewart was in attendance at a reception held to examine the inquiry’s findings and consider efforts by the NSW government to implement the recommendations. It was also a chance to reflect on justice and safety for the LGBTQ+ community in the long run.

Minister of Police Yasmin Catley and Commissioner of Police Karen Webb also attended the reception at NSW Parliament, as did LGBTQ+ community representatives, advocates, hate crime victims, and the families of hate crime victims.

DTL recently supported the ACON Love Social event for LGBTQ+ elders.
