Dentons adds Jonathan Stafford as construction partner in Sydney

Dentons has announced the appointment of Jonathan Stafford, who has over two decades of experience across all areas of construction and infrastructure law, as a partner on its construction team in Sydney. 

In a news release, the firm shared that Stafford’s addition aims to support clients dealing with complex infrastructure and development projects across the country. 

“As we expand our presence, our priority remains helping clients achieve their goals,” said Marcus Graham – Dentons partner and head of construction, planning, government, and real estate in Australia – in the news release. 

“Jonathan’s appointment underscores our strategic focus on sectors that drive Australia’s growth,” said Amber Warren, the firm’s Australia chair and Australasia region chief executive officer. 

“Construction and infrastructure are dynamic and evolving sectors, and Dentons’ global reach and local capability position us to deliver outstanding outcomes for clients,” Stafford added. “I’m thrilled to join the team and help drive success on complex projects.” 

Stafford’s work has covered matters involving contract drafting and negotiation, project structuring, procurement, risk management, and regulatory compliance. 

“His extensive experience across major infrastructure and construction projects positions Dentons to deliver even greater value to clients navigating complex, high-stakes developments,” Warren said in the firm’s news release

“Jonathan’s experience adds significant depth to our team and enhances the value we bring to every engagement,” Graham added. 

Stafford has handled projects in various sectors, including transport, energy, telecommunications, health, education, and retail. He has served in secondments in senior legal and commercial roles.

He joined DLA Piper as a partner in the Greater Sydney Area in July 2019. In Sydney, he was a partner at Colin Biggers & Paisley from February 2013 to June 2019 and an executive general manager at Downer from January 2016 to January 2018. 

Stafford served as special counsel in the construction and major projects group at Clayton Utz in the Greater Sydney Area from July 2006 to January 2013. 

In London, UK, he worked as an associate for finance and projects at Addleshaw Goddard from September 2003 to June 2006 and as a solicitor in the construction and projects group at DLA Piper from September 1997 to August 2003. 

Stafford completed the legal practice course at BPP Law School. He earned a master’s degree in construction law from the University of Melbourne, a postgraduate diploma in law from the College of Law, Chester, and a BSc (honours) from the University of Warwick.
