Clifford Gouldson teams up with USQ on student prize fund

Clifford Gouldson (CGLaw) has teamed up with the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) to launch a student prize fund.

The CGLaw Endowment Fund will be used to grant an annual prize to the USQ students who perform best in the areas of Civil Procedure or Advanced Civil Procedure.

“As our local university and home of Toowoomba’s only law course we are very proud to partner with USQ to offer this perpetual prize,” CGLaw managing director Ben Gouldson said.

This partnership is an extension of CGLaw’s existing working relationship with USQ, he explained.

“Our firm has a long history of working with USQ both as a supplier of legal services and as a critical member of the business community in Toowoomba,” Gouldson said. “I am personally a proud USQ graduate in commerce, and the firm has had great success employing current and former USQ law students.”

He also praised USQ’s designation as one of the world’s top universities.

The CGLaw Endowment Fund consists of a financial gift from the firm that has been matched by the university. To celebrate the launch, USQ Professors Reid Mortensen and Caroline Hart visited the CGLaw office.

The Australian Legal Education Awards recently named two USQ lecturers as 2021 Excellence in Teaching awardees. Professor Noeleen McNamara and Associate Professor Kerstin Braun received the nod for the resources they developed to clarify academic misconduct for students.

The educators provided law students with examples of academic integrity breaches, including plagiarism and contract cheating, according to a USQ media release. The professors also deepened students’ understanding through case studies.

“It is important to educate our students on the topic and it helps to build awareness around the requirements for this career path,” McNamara said. “It also encourages students to think about their future employment options, so they can be better prepared for these opportunities when they come about.”

Braun added that the award highlight the pair’s dedication to improving the first-year school experience for law students.
