Stuff has snapped up seasoned media in-house lawyer Allison Whitney as its new CLO.

Whitney commences with the company this week. She previously spent 10 years with NZME, holding executive positions including GC, company secretary and executive lead for culture and performance.

“Few legal minds know media businesses as well as Allison does. Her experience in what is now a data and technology-led industry, married with her passion for great journalism, is a combination that is difficult to find”, Stuff CEO Laura Maxwell said.

Whitney sat on the board of the News Publishers’ Association, and has gleaned both legal and corporate experience in the media landscapes of New Zealand and overseas. She described the current period as a critical one for news media.

“Trusted independent news media plays such an important role in our democracy and I am committed to playing my part in upholding that role, protecting and sustaining news media into the future”, she said.
