The New Zealand Law Society has backed the Ministry for Women’s initiative to address the gender pay gap in the country in time for IWD 2025.

The ministry has put out a call for organisations in New Zealand to share how they are closing the gap in a survey to be released this month. The Law Society confirmed that it would be participating in the survey and urged law firms and organisations to do so as well.

The Law Society noted that while the gender pay gap has narrowed since 1998, the pace of reduction has slowed. In 1998, the gap was at 16.3%; as of 30 June 2024, it was at 8.2%.

The Law Society also helped the Ministry for Women to develop its Gender Pay Gap Toolkit, which is intended to help organisations compute for their gender pay gap and craft a way to close the gap.

Moreover, the Ministry for Women held a roadshow in Wellington yesterday where the Minister for Women spoke on addressing the gender pay gap, as did local businesses. A second roadshow will be conducted in Auckland on 20 March.

This year, the themes for IWD 2025 are “For ALL women and girls”, “Rights, Equality, Empowerment” and “Accelerate Action”.
