The Honourable Justice Denis Clifford has been appointed as a Court of Appeal judge, Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson has announced.
Clifford started his legal career after earning his LLB (Hons) in 1978 from Victoria University of Wellington by joining Buddle Anderson Kent in Wellington. He left the firm in 1980 and became a visiting fellow at the University of Illinois Law School.
He returned to New Zealand in 1982 after the merger between Buddle Anderson Kent and Findlay Hoggard Richmond, which created Buddle Findlay. He worked at the firm until 1984, when he moved to London to work at UK Magic Circle firm Slaughter and May.
After another two years, he returned to New Zealand to become a Buddle Findlay partner until 2001. From 1998 to 2000, Clifford was on secondment with the Policy Advisory Group in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
He joined the independent bar in 2002 and was appointed a judge of the High Court in April 2006.
