The former private practice partner moves from the District Court

District Court Judge Grant Powell has been appointed as a judge of the High Court, Attorney-General David Parker has announced.
After finishing with an LLB (Hons) from Auckland University in 1987, Powell commenced as a solicitor at Kensington Swan in Auckland. He then became a partner at Walters Williams & Co in 1996, before leaving to establish his own firm in 2003.
The judge left Powell Webber in 2011 to join the independent bar, before being appointed as a District Court judge in 2013.
Powell has played key roles as counsel in several Treaty of Waitangi settlement negotiations and in representing primary claimants in regional inquiries in the Waitangi Tribunal, Parker said.
The new judge, who will sit in Auckland, will be sworn in on 1 March at Number 1 High Court, Auckland at 4:00p.m.
The appointment follows the appointments of Kenneth Johnston QC and Christine Mary Grice CNZM to the High Court bench.
