Law Society states support for Ukrainian bar associations

The New Zealand Law Society | Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa has voiced its support for the Ukrainian National Bar Association and the Ukrainian Bar Association.

In a 17 March statement, the organisation said that it stood with the bar associations and with the Ukrainian people over Russia’s invasion of the country, joining the ranks of nations that have publicly condemned Russia’s recent moves. The Law Society pointed out that Russia’s actions “are a violation of one of the most fundamental rules of international law, and a direct threat to the rule of law.”

The organisation highlighted the prohibition against states using or threatening force against fellow state except in self-defence or in line with a resolution by the UN Security Council.

“Lawyers across the world, including in Ukraine and Russia, are working to protect the rule of law and to assist those who have had to flee their homes for safety,” Law Society President Tiana Epati said. “We know many New Zealand lawyers will be offering their services to assist this humanitarian effort.”

Epati added that according to the New Zealand government, special visas will be issued to relocate the families of New Zealand Ukrainians.

Earlier this month, the government also announced the passing of the Russia Sanctions Act, which is targeted towards those linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
