Law Association announces first-ever employment law conference

The Law Association of New Zealand (TLANZ) has announced its first-ever employment law conference, which will be held in October.

Employment Court chief judge Christina Inglis is set to be in attendance, as is workplace relations and safety minister Brooke van Velden. The conference will be entitled Burning Issues in Employment Law.

The event will tackle the Employment Relations Act, AI at work, migrant exploitation, privacy law and high-income employees’ dismissal. It will also address recent legislative developments in employment law, including the the proposed gateway test, high-income threshold and the 30-day rule.

van Velden is also set to discuss her ministerial priorities, progress to date and future expectations.

“The issues on the agenda from AI and migrant exploitation to the future of dismissal rights are not just legal debates. They go to the heart of fairness, productivity and trust in the employment relationship, which makes it vital that we confront them directly”, TLANZ president Tony Herring said.

The conference will take place on 9 October at the Park Hyatt in Auckland.

“Employment law touches every worker and every business. Whether it is reforms to the Employment Relations Act, the treatment of high-income employees, or the evolving force of AI, the conference will provide clarity on what’s coming and how best to respond”, conference chair Catherine Stewart said.
