Kieran O’Connell spent his student days honing his love of music by playing in bands. While his passion didn't translate to a career in that field, he found a way to honour it by going into IP law, where today, he enjoys "helping people make sense of tricky situations".

In the first part of this December 2024 interview, the Duncan Cotterill partner talks about his work across New Zealand and the UK, and the type of day he would love to relive.

What made you choose a career in law?

I chose law because I have always enjoyed problem-solving and helping people make sense of tricky situations. What initially drew me to intellectual property was a love of music and playing in bands through high school and university. When I realised a career in music wasn’t on the cards, I figured intellectual property law could be a good fit.

What's your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is the variety—there’s always something different, whether it’s advising clients on protection strategies, discussing trade mark portfolio management, or working out a pragmatic solution to a trickly problem there is always a new task with a new challenge.

What, in your opinion, has been the most memorable event of your career?

I’ve been lucky to have a career that’s been both varied and memorable. I’ve worked on IP legislation and helped negotiate free trade agreements for the New Zealand government, worked in-house for an entertainment company in the UK, and worked with some of Australia and New Zealand’s most iconic brands. For uniqueness, one project that I was involved in was advising the New Zealand government on the intellectual property aspects of choosing a new flag during the referendum process. While the flag wasn’t replaced, it was fascinating to work on a project with such national significance.

What has been your proudest accomplishment in the last year or so?

The decision to change law firms and join Duncan Cotterill. It was a big step, but one I felt would really stretch me and help with my professional growth, while also allowing me to work with a team and people that are great at what they do. The decision-making was daunting, but the process has been really exciting, and I have been able to dive into new challenges and opportunities. Sometimes stepping outside your comfort zone is the best way to grow.

If you could relive one day in your life, which day would it be and why?

I’m happy with where I am right now, but if I were to relive a day, it would ideally be a weekend or holiday when I can spend time with family and friends, catch some of the kids' sports, squeeze in a game of basketball with friends, and finish off the day with a cold beer in the late sun at Parrotdog.
