Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy’s approval is recognition of the justice’s service as a judge of the High Court

Hon John Gerard Fogarty gets to retain the title “The Honourable” in recognition of his service as a former judge of the High Court of New Zealand, according to the New Zealand Law Society.
The approval came from Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy after Fogarty’s retirement sitting in the Christchurch High Court on 11 August.
Fogarty graduated with an honours law degree from the University of Canterbury and a master’s of law from the University of Toronto. He joined Christchurch firm Weston Ward & Lascelles in 1978, eventually becoming a partner at the firm.
He became a barrister sole in 1985 and took silk in 1990. He is a trained mediator and arbitrator and is a specialist in public law and commercial law. He was appointed as a High Court judge in 2003, sitting in Christchurch.
