Juno Legal lawyer offers advice that accounts for potential overlaps across legal specialisations
Ioane Tuupo grew up with a strong sense of service thanks to his parents. This sense of service, he said, eventually became his favourite part of being lawyer as he enjoys using the law “to turn concepts into meaningful outcomes”.
Tuupo’s father in particular was the one who put him on the path to a legal career from his youth. Since then, Tuupo has practised in commercial, regulatory, privacy and public law for over 10 years.
He credits his experience with different areas of the law as being “particularly useful as an in-house lawyer where no two days are the same”.
“The client gets the benefit of obtaining legal advice that considers the potential intersection from different legal lenses”, Tuupo told NZ Lawyer.
To date, he has held positions at the Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Accident Compensation Corporation, where he was senior solicitor. He has also worked in Australia, taking on senior roles at the Department of Resources in Queensland and at the Queensland University of Technology.
“I enjoy working closely with the business and seeing the tireless efforts put into a project or work come to life. I imagine the satisfaction is equivalent to a builder driving through a suburb pointing to houses they helped build”, Tuupo told NZ Lawyer.
His work in different locations and legal environments has, he said, shown him that there are “amazing and talented people behind the scenes doing work the results of which we may take for granted, until its absence is an inconvenience”. He added that at the current stage of his career, he welcomed the opportunity to work across organisations.
This year, Tuupo made the jump to Juno Legal, where he is supporting Waikato Waters. The role, he explained, “allows me to bring the experience I’ve built across various sectors, while still being exposed to new industries and challenges”.
“I enjoy being able to step into a business, understand what matters to them and use my legal experience to help find practical solutions”, he told NZ Lawyer.
Tuupo works from Kirikiriroa Hamilton.
