The IBA president emphasized the contribution of accessible legal representation to justice systems
The International Bar Association's pro bono committee has spotlighted the contribution of pro bono legal work to society in commemoration of United Nations Public Service Day this year.
The committee outlined its current projects in this space, which include global surveys to evaluate the effect of pro bono work from various perspectives and collaborating with different pro bono organizations across the globe to raise awareness and identify potential opportunities for lawyer involvement. The committtee's work champions the IBA Pro Bono Declaration, which was published in 2008.
IBA Pro Bono Committee co-chairs Arturo H Banegas Masia and Flavia Regina de Souza Oliveira are active in these projects.
"As pro bono work receives greater attention these days, there has never been a better time to get involved. Working as a pro bono attorney is not only a profound service to those who need it most – it is also deeply rewarding for those who answer the call," Banegas Masia said in a statement.
de Souza Oliveira added that pro bono represented "a strong expression of justice since lawyers donate their time and talent for those who could not access legal assistance, granting the most vulnerable an active voice towards change."
The pro bono committee confirmed that it was revising the IBA Pro Bono Declaration with input from other IBA committees.
"The value of pro bono work cannot be overestimated. Lawyers are ensuring access to justice for people who cannot afford legal representation by offering their skills without charging. These are not just admirable deeds but also real-world examples of a dedication to ensuring that everyone has access to justice," IBA President Jaime Carey said. "By maintaining the values of fairness and equality before the law, which are central to IBA goals, pro bono work also reflects important contributions to society. I urge all law professionals to search for and commit to pro bono work however they can in support of justice systems."
United Nations Public Service Day was celebrated on June 23.
