Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has elected Fatim Jumabhoy as its first-ever Singapore managing partner.

Jumabhoy will begin leading the Singapore team effective 1 January.

“Client demand is soaring across our Asia practice, including for legal services in Singapore,” Asia managing partner May Tai said. “An excellent lawyer, Fatim has worked both in house and in private practice, starting her career as a barrister. Her diverse experience of the law and business is perfectly suited for such a transformational time for our Asia practice and our profession.”

Jumabhoy currently leads HSF’s Asia employment, pensions and incentives team. She is a permanent resident of Singapore, having relocated to the country in 2011.

She was part of the in-house legal team at a multinational tech company before making the jump to HSF in 2013. She was a barrister of England and Wales early in her career, and served as an independent adviser to the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

In her practice, Jumabhoy advises on complex multi-jurisdiction labour and employment issues.

The role was created to expand on HSF’s leadership team in Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia managing partner Alastair Henderson will continue to helm the firm’s team in this region.

“Adding this new leadership role will allow Alastair to continue to drive expansion in the wider Southeast Asia region while Fatim leads the Singapore practice through a significant period of growth,” Tai said.
