With talent resourcing having become a big concern in the legal profession, GC Craig Douglas of Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation’s legal team believes the key is to work smart.

“It’s pretty clear that resourcing has become an issue, not just in the legal profession and not only in New Zealand but worldwide,” Douglas said. “The competition for top talent will continue. To deal with this challenge we’re thinking more about how we can work smarter.”

In particular, he is zeroing in on the implementation of tech as a strong solution, “focusing on processes to automate or eliminate and on how technology can make our day jobs easier and more productive”.

“It’s about optimising our time so we are focusing on the areas where we can add the most value”, Douglas explained.

Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation’s legal team nabbed the trophy for Financial Services In-House Team of the Year at the 2022 NZ Law Awards, and the organisation aims to use its platform as an institutional investor “to effect real positive change” in the country.

More 2022 NZ Law Awards winners discuss their thoughts on the big night in this commemorative guide released earlier this year.
