System allows firm to delegate client matters more efficiently based on areas of expertise
HFW has launched a global resource management system that allows it to efficiently delegate client matters to lawyers across the firm based on their areas of expertise.
With the new system, lawyer utilisation is monitored in real time through a novel software platform. As a result, matters can be allocated based on workloads and areas of expertise, enabling the firm to maximise their global roster and effectively balance the distribution of work.
This bucks the usual set-up of law firms, where associates are bound to specific partners.
“Our new resource management system enables us to make best use of the incredible expertise we have across our global industry groups, legal services and international network. It also means that our lawyers get a chance to broaden their skills by working on a variety of matters,” said HFW COO Sid Welham.
The implementation follows a six-month period of pilot testing, during which HFW’s global Aerospace group piloted the system. Over a three-month period, the group reported that global utilisation increased by 7.5%; in the London branch alone, utilisation rose by 20%.
HFW considers the new system to be pivotal in how the firm moves forward, especially in the current climate.
“The pilot was an overwhelming success, and the system is already proving invaluable during the COVID-19 crisis. Despite much of the firm switching to remote working as a result of lockdowns, we have been able to quickly and effectively respond to urgent client enquiries and help them through this challenging period,” Welham said.
Legal resource management consultancy firm Mason & Cook worked with HFW to develop the system, which integrates Mason & Cook’s Vantage software. Consultant Alex Trodd collaborated closely with HFW throughout the development and implementation process.
This system represents another step in HFW’s initiative to build its global presence in 2020. In January, the firm increased the number of partners in its Australia branch to 24 with the promotion of Jo Garland and the appointment of Dr Michael Maxwell.
