Financial services specialist Andrew Suggate has made partner at Buddle Findlay as of 1 July.

The appointment comes about two years after he commenced with the firm as a senior associate. The Auckland-based lawyer has tackled all aspects of raising and investing capital, investment structuring, financial product (including insurance) structuring, offering and distribution, payment services, prudential and conduct regulation, consumer credit, financial advice, and anti-money laundering.

He has worked across New Zealand and the UK in both private practice and in-house roles. Over a five-year stint at Bank of New Zealand, he was a senior corporate lawyer (banking, products and markets) who went to on become head of legal (partnership banking) and later executive manager of strategy and execution, per LinkedIn.

Suggate was a senior associate at MinterEllisonRuddWatts and worked as a market regulator at the London Stock Exchange. In his legal career, he has worked with domestic and offshore financial services businesses, banks, fund managers, insurers, non-bank deposit takers, fintechs, payment service providers, private funds, consumer credit providers, financial advice businesses, brokers, and investment platform providers.

He advised a commercial bank on establishing a discretionary investment management service for its wealth management business. He also helped an investment platform and broker to secure NZX participant status.

Suggate helped a commercial bank to set up and operate the government’s business finance guarantee scheme. Moreover, he guided investment managers in establishing private equity and venture capital funds; he also advised overseas investment managers on wholesale fund of fund structures.

He assisted with the setup and ongoing operations of equity crowd-funding and peer-to-peer lending platforms. In addition, he guided financial services businesses in relation to regulator engagement and licensing requirements under the Financial Markets Conduct Act.

Suggate is part of the Banking and Financial Services Law Association and of the Institution of Financial Professions New Zealand. He obtained his LLB/BA in law, history and Spanish from the University of Otago.

In a LinkedIn post, the new partner credited fellow partners Scott Abel, Daniel Collins, and Paul Farrugia with where he is today.

Last month, Buddle Findlay also welcomed new senior associates Annie O’Connor and Man Sum Chiu.
