Eminent American lawyer to lecture in Auckland
Alan Dershowitz, the Harvard emeritus professor and big-name criminal appellate lawyer, will be giving a one-off lecture on 14 February in Auckland.

In the talk, which is presented by MinterEllisonRuddWatts and the Raye Freedman Trust, Dershowitz will explore the erosion of civil liberties in ‘liberal’ societies and examine how extremism is undermining law.

It will be held in the Fisher & Paykel Lecture Theatre of the University of Auckland Business School’s Owen Glenn Building, from 6p.m. to 7p.m.

Dershowitz is youngest full professor of law in the history of Harvard Law School. He held the school’s Felix Frankfurter professorship from 1993 to 2013, when he stepped down.

In addition to his career in the academe, he is also a leading criminal appellate lawyer. He won 13 of the 15 murder and attempted murder cases he handled. He has represented celebrity clients, including Mike Tyson, Patty Hearst, and Jim Bakker. He also played a role in having the Claus von Bülow conviction overturned, as well as being an appellate adviser for the defence in the OJ Simpson murder trial in 1995.

Dershowitz, who specialises in US constitutional law and criminal law, has authored several books on politics, the law, and Israel. He is now a regular contributor and political analyst for CNN and Fox News.

Those planning to attend the event are encouraged to reserve their seats here.
