Mt Cass Wind Farm is the first wind farm in Northern Canterbury
Duncan Cotterill has helped MainPower New Zealand Limited to sell the development rights for the Mt Cass Wind Farm – the first wind farm in Northern Canterbury.
Yinson Renewables won the rights to the 94.6 MW project, although Mainpower will still be a landowner. Mt Cass Wind Farm is set to produce over 300 GWh of electricity annually for about 40,000 homes by 2028.
This will be the first wind farm in Yinson Renewables’ portfolio under construction.
“The Mt Cass Wind Farm represents a significant expansion of our footprint in New Zealand. We are privileged to be the first global independent power producer to own and construct a wind farm in the country”, CEO David Brunt said in a media release.
According to Duncan Cotterill lead partner Mark Cathro, the project “has been many years in the making and represents an important step forward for renewable energy”.
Cathro and his team helped negotiate, execute and complete the transaction. Cathro was assisted by construction and infrastructure partner Julia Flattery, senior associate Scott Walker and solicitor Georgia Day.
Brigid McArthur and Kate Watt led the team from Greenwood Roche that advised Yinson Renewables.
Mainpower will still construct and maintain local electricity infrastructure for network connection. It hosts seven turbines on land, which will be managed as a conservation area.
“Mt Cass has always been about delivering long-term benefits for our region and supporting New Zealand’s renewable energy future. This transition ensures the project moves forward with strong expertise while maintaining MainPower’s role in connecting communities to clean energy”, Mainpower board chair Tony King said in a media release.
