DLA Piper’s Nick Byrnes wants to leave a positive legacy in the profession
Nick Byrnes

Nick Byrnes loves the constant evolution in real estate and construction law. The DLA Piper special counsel was drawn to a legal career as a result of his interest in the way law regulates and shapes society, and today, he’s embraced the fun and the challenge of working in a dynamic field.

In the first part of this August interview, Byrnes reveals the TV shows that helped inspire him to pursue law and shares why private practice law is "a team game".

What made you choose a career in law?

I've always been interested in how law both regulates and shapes society and wanted to be involved in the process in some way. Watching Boston Legal and then, later, Suits, may have also been a factor.

What's your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is how fast-paced and dynamic real estate and construction practice is. The sectors I am involved in are constantly evolving and it's challenging and fun evolving with them.

What in your opinion has been the most memorable event of your career to date?

Being recognised as a Future Legal Leader by NZ Lawyer was very memorable, as I never really expected to receive any sort of public recognition in this area. It has given a real drive to make sure I live up to that recognition and ensure that, in the long term, I have left a positive legacy in the legal profession.

What’s the biggest lesson you learned in your career and what advice can you give fellow lawyers about it?

The biggest lesson I have learned in my career is that I don't (and never will) know everything, and nor do I need to try to. Law in private practice is a team game, and you will have a much better chance of success if you regularly draw on the experience and expertise of your colleagues.

If you could relive one day in your life, which day would it be and why?

My wedding day. It was a truly fantastic day, but it seemed to fly by so I'd love the opportunity to re-live it.
