Claro expands senior ranks with two new appointments

Claro has expanded its senior ranks with the appointments of Gillian Weir and Abigail Brand, reported the New Zealand Law Society

Weir ascended to the role of senior associate, while Brand recently joined the firm’s Christchurch office as a senior solicitor.

Weir is an experienced litigator with a long-standing interest in legal and ethical issues arising in the health and disability sector. Since joining Claro in 2021, she has appeared in prosecutions before the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and advised on complaints to the Health and Disability Commissioner.

Moreover, she has represented clients before the District Court, the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Prior to her health law practice, Weir first practised immigration and employment law in London. On returning to New Zealand, she joined Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper). In 2018, she earned her Postgraduate Diploma in Bioethics and Health Law, with distinction, from the University of Otago.

Brand recently worked with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a legal advisor. In the role, she dealt with matters relating to the regulation and discipline of health practitioners and got involved in various professional misconduct and appeal cases before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

She began her legal career with Kensington Swan (now Dentons Kensington Swan) as part of its litigation team. She then moved to Australia and joined Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) as an associate. During her stint with NRF, she developed significant expertise in dispute resolution.
