Inquiry launched into WA’s justices of the peace, visiting justices

The Standing Committee on Public Administration of the Parliament of Western Australia has announced the launch of an inquiry into the state’s justices of the peace (JPs) and visiting justices, which began on 2 December 2025.

The inquiry’s insights, to be included in a report, will seek to strengthen the JP framework through ongoing improvements to the effectiveness, capability, and sustainability of JP services across Western Australia.

According to an announcement from the state government, the inquiry calls upon a broad cross-section of the community to participate and provide written submissions by the deadline of 13 February 2026. JPs, witnessing centres, and community stakeholders can share their viewpoints and experiences.

According to information from the WA Parliament’s website, those interested can:

  • Send written submissions directly by accessing the ‘Lodge your submission’ button on the committee’s online submission portal
  • Email or post their written submissions, marked ‘attention to the committee,’ to the address stated in the ‘Contact Details’ box of the relevant page

Those needing assistance to send their written submissions can reach out to committee staff.

Key issues

Per the WA Parliament’s website information, submissions may tackle important issues such as:

  • the appointment process
  • the sufficiency of training requirements
  • attendance during the required training
  • functions
  • scope of powers
  • oversight
  • review
  • age limits
  • availability to perform the role
  • other matters the committee would deem relevant

Pursuant to parliamentary inquiry protocols, all contributor submissions remain confidential until the committee’s formal release. Contributors may also seek confidentiality for all or part of their submissions upon supplying reasons when lodging their submissions online.

Next steps

At a later date, the committee may conduct hearings regarding this matter. Contributors can express their interest in participating during these hearings when sending their submissions online, according to the state government’s announcement
